What is Human Resource Management?


Human Resource Management is a strategic approach to manage people in an organization to achieve the organization’s business goals. It comprises of recruitments and selections, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, employee relations and compliance with labor laws. The main objective of Human Resource Management is to maximize employee performance and satisfaction while aligning with organizational goals.

Human Resource Management involves in both daily operations as well as the long-term strategic planning. Lately, it has expanded from a primarily administrative function to a strategic level, considerably contributing to overall business success.

Nowadays, the most valuable asset in an organization is its people. The major responsibility of the Human Resource Management is to ensure that the employees are effectively selected, developed, motivated and retained to contribute the organization’s goals. Human Resource professionals aim to create a workplace where employee can perform well, feel happy and contribute the organization succeed. 

Here are some views from Human Resource experts:
  1. Michael Armstrong (2014) expresses, “HRM is about managing people in a way that helps organizations achieve their objectives by maximizing the potential of their employees.” This focuses on the strategic role HRM plays in aligning human resources with organizational objectives.
  2. Gary Dessler (2019) mentions that “Human resource management is the process of recruiting, training, developing, and retaining employees who are essential for achieving organizational success.” This definition explains the key objectives of HRM and their importance to the overall performance of the organization.
  3. Ulrich et al. (2013), says HRM can be seen as “a set of practices and policies that provide the framework within which people work, fostering high levels of motivation, performance, and commitment.” This statement points out the role of HRM in creating a positive work environment and enhancing employee engagement.
